June 03, 2006 - The fuel pump saga continues,
installing the Boost-A-Pump and sizing up the exhaust (1)
I called the guy that sold me the fuel pump earlier in the week.
He promised me that he'd send a new pump out as soon as he had a
tracking number for the incorrect pump. I put the pump in the
mail and emailed him the tracking number. True to his word a
new pump arrived on Friday, June 2nd. When we got to the
garage I tore open the package. My stomach was churning and my jaw definitely
hit the floor. This is what I saw.
I couldn't believe it. He sent the wrong damn pump again!
I still had his number in my phone's call log so I looked it up and
called him. To my delight he answered his phone. I gave
him a stern talking to and he agreed to overnight the right pump
on Monday. That was fine and dandy for him but it would delay
the project another week. Despite being incredibly angry with the whole
situation I realized that I didn't have much of a choice so I
agreed. After I spent a few minutes pouting we moved on to the Kenne Bell Boost-A-Pump installation. First we needed to
decide where to mount it. I had already decided that it would
go in the trunk, but I wasn't sure where in the trunk to put it.
After taking a good look round we decided to mount it to the
molding at the rear of the trunk. A couple of small screws
held it in place. We were a little worried that the molded
piece wouldn't be able to handle the weight but it did.
Once we found the right wires connecting the Boost-A-Pump wasn't a big
deal. A few soldered connections later it was in place and all
we needed to do was run the wire for the dial up to the front.
One of the most important aspects of the installation is making sure
the Boost-A-Pump is well grounded. The picture above shows a
spot on the floor of the trunk that we used as a ground. We
removed the paint and drilled a hole. Here's a picture of the
finished installation with the ground attached and the wire covered.
Routing the dial cable took a few minutes. We needed to find a
good way though the convertible top stuff in the trunk. We
eventually found the hole for the speaker wires and used it. I
wasn't sure exactly where I wanted the dial so for now we just left
it on the floor.
