May 7, 2006 - Turbo Oil Lines (1)
Now that the turbos had been mounted we needed to route the turbo
oil supply and drain lines. We thought it would be a pretty
straight forward, just find a way to route the drain lines so there
were no low spots. Before we got started I wanted to get a
good picture of the car from the front now that it was finally warm
enough to open the garage door.
The first thing we had to do was install the drain line adapters in
the oil pan bungs. They went in without a problem, we put some
Teflon tape on the threads and used an open end wrench to tighten
them down.
After the adapters were in place I had to cut the rubber drain lines
to size. As I was doing so I noticed that I sliced my finger
open on the barbs on the adapters. I had no idea they were so
sharp, I guess I should have had my gloves on while I was putting
the tape on and installing them. As I was measuring the
passenger side drain line I noticed that avoiding low spots was
going to be difficult. The ABS controller was in the way and
there wasn't much I could do about it. I did the best I could
and cut the line to fit. I tried bending some of the lines to
the ABS controller to make room for the drain line but I wasn't very
successful. I put the turbo end on first and then put the oil
pan side on. There was a slight low spot but I didn't see any
other way to route the line so I'd have to live with it.
As I investigated the driver side I noticed that the drain flange on
the turbo was pointing the wrong way and prevented me from even
putting the rubber hose on. I couldn't believe that I over
looked this completely obvious detail and I didn't want to swap the
flanges but I had no other option. Unfortunately the rubber
hose doesn't just slide off of the flange and adapters, I had to cut
the passenger side hose off and was not able to reuse it. It
looked like a fairly standard hose so I thought we might be able to
find more of it at the local parts store. After the flanges
were swapped it was damn obvious that they were not originally on
the right sides. Both flanges now pointed more towards the
center of the car and the oil pan. I was able to install the
driver side drain line, but the routing was still questionable.
Here's a picture of the drain line leaving the turbo.
The drains were just about complete and there was nothing more I
could do with them until we got the other drain line from the parts
store so I decided to move on to the supply lines. Dad started
the job and I jumped in soon thereafter. We removed the stock
oil pressure sender and had to install a Tee so we could connect the
sender and another Tee to the two oil supply lines.
There were two ways would could connect these, the sender one top and the
supply lines underneath, or the supply lines on top and the sender
underneath.
