May 29, 2006 - More problems: The Front
Suspension and the Fuel Pump Saga (1)
When I walked into the garage on the morning of May 29 I went
straight to the fuel tank and started removing the fuel pump.
I didn't have much of a problem getting it out until I tried to get
the filter bag through the hole in the fuel tank. After a few
tries I got it, I had to pinch and twist a little but it came out.
I took the pump out of the basket and looked at the part number.
My suspicions were confirmed. It was the wrong pump.
While I was messing around with the fuel pump, Dad was finishing up
the gauge install. One of the first challenges he had to solve
was the wire routing. He needed to find a hole through the
firewall that would allow the wires and tubes access to the gauges
inside the car. He found one in the driver side wheel well.
With the gauge install finished we moved onto the front
suspension. I grabbed the box of Maximum Motorsports
suspension components and tried to figure out how these coil-overs
went together. The directions were fairly straight forward.
One thing I was disappointed about was the Bilstein shock needed to
be ground down a tad. Here's what it looked like when we
finished grinding.
It's a little hard to tell in the picture, but the shoulder where
the shaft meets the body of the strut was ground some. As it
ended up we ground a little bit more off than we needed to, but it
worked so we were happy. The rest of the assembly went
smoothly. Here's the driver side coil-over completely
assembled
We ran into some confusion when it came time to put the spacers
on the top of the strut. The spacers sit between the strut and
the caster/camber plates. There are a variety of spacers and
the caster/camber installation instructions and the coil-over
installation instructions said to
use two different combinations. We picked one and went with
it, I can't imagine that it's going to make much of a difference.
Installing the driver side strut assembly was pretty easy. It
slid into place like a normal strut does and we maneuvered the
spindle into position. The holes lined up and we put the bolts
through.
